Road Safety Plan
The school works together closely with Ceri Williams, Anglesey’s Road Safety Education Officer. Two pupils are selected each year in Year 6 as the School’s Safety Officers. Two pupils are selected from Year 5 as deputy officers also to shadow the chief officers’ work. A number of activities are organized.

Parking Area
To avoid any possibility of an accident of any kind, parents and children should not walk through the parking area when coming to school or when leaving on any account. Everyone should use the purposeful footpaths. This request is an important rule that is part of the School’s Health and Safety strategy and is part of the school’s steps to lessen risk of accidents. The pre-school and post-school periods are busy and dangerous periods for walkers and children. Please assist us to avoid any possibility of accident by conforming with the request.

It is a requirement that every school has a safety arrangement in relation to parking areas. Unfortunately there have been mortal and dangerous accidents in school parking areas in the past. Anglesey County Council insists that we ensure users’ safety in relation to parking areas. In this school only teaching staff, support staff, supply teachers, support teachers (musical instruments etc.), Mudiad Meithrin employees, the Taxi, ‘disabled ’ users’ cars by arrangement and agreement beforehand with the Headteacher, have definite and official permission to use the parking area in front of the school. There is only room for up to 5 cars in the parking area

The parking area is a small place and it cannot be ensured that there is enough room to park a car safely. Nobody who uses the car park should back out into the highway in leaving the car park for safety.

In accordance with Anglesey’s Child Protection policy, the school has a Child Protection policy. The policy exists to ensure that children are not abused in school or beyond. In cases where there are claims of abuse there are tight structures to be followed.

As part of the Child Protection procedure we have structures that ask for parents’ permission for pupils to use the internet, ask for parents’ permission for the school to take pictures of the pupils at work for the use of the school, permission for members of the media to take pictures for the use of a newspaper and permission for known individuals to make a video of school presentations.

Child protection is an important and serious matter but the policy and procedures that we have exist to ensure the safety and welfare of your child. If you wish to discuss the policy, contact the Headteacher.

Equal Opportunities
Every individual in our charge should receive education of equal value within the school’s general plan. We try to create a safe, trusting and motivating atmosphere in every corner of the school and co-operation, care and tolerance are encouraged, between adults and children and between children and each other. Distiction is given to every individual’s contribution and his ideas and opinion are respected. Fair and reasonable behavioural expectations are placed on the pupils, expectations that will lead to awareness and understanding of the needs and rights of others. We try to ensure that the pupils receive positive messages of equality. It is endeavoured to avoid creating gender differences in the tasks set for pupils, e.g. in Physical Education, Technology, Art; in classroom organization and group composition, in creating rows, in sharing duties, in referring pupils to places and play and work equipment. It is ensured that extra-curricular activities are open to everyone. It is ensured that praise and rebuke methods are common to everyone. This aspect is detailed further in our Equal Opportunities Policy.

Promorting Racial Equality / Responding to cases of Racism
Here, at Ysgol Gymuned Bodffordd, we wish to ensure that every pupil receives the opportunity to nurture life’s necessary skills. We need to ensure and provide an environment that enables pupils to nurture the values and attitudes and the basic personal and social skills that would be necessary in contemporary society and culture . We consider that racial comments from anyone who is involved in the school are completely unacceptable.

The school endeavours not to differentiate between anyone on the basis of race, religion, nationality, ethnicity or national lineage. We endeavour to promote fairness for everyone through the education that is provided in school. We endeavour at all times to avoid any kind of passive differentiation that could be an impediment to learning. We would not accept stereotyping and prejudice and would compete against it if need arose. Where possible, we would celebrate the difference and the cultural richness within our community.

Preventing Racism
Every pupil has the right to receive the best that we could offer as regards education and marginal activities. We do not accept any form of racism or racial behaviour. Should such cases happen, we would respond directly to avoid repeating such behaviour/occurence. There is a requirement to record cases of racial comments or interference and contact the Education Authority.

Religion
This school does not hold direct and formal links with any religious denomination. In accordance with national curriculum requirements the different religions and beliefs that occur in the world are presented to the pupils, as well as morals and guidelines for living in the world outside the boundaries of the school.

Daily services are held in the school following the law’s requirements. The services will deal with a variety of themes, with pupils and teachers responsible for presenting them. Service times are: 9.00am daily. An annual plan of the school’s service themes is provided.

Worship
There are no direct or formal religious links. Ministers and friends are welcomed to school to assist us on occasion. The pupils in their turn go to chapel to take part in services such as Harvest Thanksgiving. The objective is to get the school to play a prominent and appropriate part in the community’s spiritual life.

If a parent does not wish for his child to take part in services nor in Biblical/Religious studies then, according to his conscience the parent has the right to withdraw the child from the Religious Education provision that is offered. The Headteacher should be notified of the wish to do so in a clear letter.

This school has an official school uniform. It is felt that school uniform leads to nurturing pride in the school and a feeling of belonging to it. We very much hope, therefore, that parents will be willing to support the school’s official uniform. Every effort is made to ensure that the cost of the school uniform items is as low as possible without doing away with good quality. To keep the cost low pupils are kindly expected to keep to two items of compulsory uniform.

The uniform is:
WHITE or BURGUNDY Polo Shirt with the school’s logo on it
‘BURGUNDY’ Sweat- Shirt with the school’s logo on it.

Nursery Class Pupils’ Uniforms
There is an opportunity for the Nursery pupils to be able to wear school uniform if that is the parents’ wishes. This follows an enquiry by some of the parents. This is an entirely voluntary selective thing. There is no compulsion at all, from the school’s side, for these children to have to wear school uniform. Pupils are welcomed just as warmly in their own colourful clothes.

POLO/SWEAT SHIRTS CAN BE PURCHASED ONLY THROUGH THE SCHOOL
Polo Shirts / Sweat Shirts– from £5.50 and from £6 according to size

Orders are organized annually around Easter. You can make arrangements regarding school uniform through Mrs Mandy Evans, the Head Teacher’s Secretary and Clerk.

We give you guidance regarding labelling or putting a name on your child’s clothes label for the convenience of the staff, the pupils and to avoid losses and mixing up clothes.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION CLOTHES
The pupils are expected to change into suitable clothes before their Physical Education lesson and back into their usual clothes at the end of the lesson. We let you know on which day your child has Physical Education lessons. You will get a Physical Education timetable at the beginning of each year.

JEWELLERY
For obvious safety reasons wearing jewellery is not permitted in school. A watch and ear studs can be worn, but other kinds of earrings are not allowed. If a child does not take off ear studs then the child will have to place plaster / tape over the studs.

The School’s Language Policy- The Bilingual Situation
The majority of pupils who attend this school come from Welsh homes and naturally therefore the main medium of Education is Welsh. We immerse children who come from non-Welsh homes in their second language from the very beginning and this policy has proved to be very successful - thanks to the teachers’ untiring work and the parents’ support and co-operation. It is good to understand that a number of non-Welsh parents are making an effort to learn the language.

A deserving place is given to learning English throughout the school, not formally at the beginning but through a number of various activities where the pupils enjoy and profit from their experiences - games, sports, singing, television programmes etc.

The school’s objective is to ensure that every pupil is bilingual before reaching 11 years of age, able to speak clearly and meaningfully, reading without trouble and able to express himself/ herself in writing. All correspondence is sent from the school to parents bilingually.

In accordance with the Authority’s policy, Welsh is the main learning medium in this school.
When new children, who are not Welsh, come to the school, it is ensured that they are happy and homely before doing everything possible to teach Welsh to them, and this is done as soon as possible, so that they are able to take their natural place in the life of the school and the society. Arrangements will be made for the pupil to visit the Language Unit in Llangefni for a term, where there is intensive and thorough provision under specialist guidance.

Anglesey County policy is a bilingual policy, and it is aimed for the pupils to attain a good standard of bilingualism by the time they leave school. We will look for a balanced progress in the pupils’ knowledge of both languages.
